A Monster Calls” is a kids’ movie with a life - lesson via CGI fantasy. It’s about a child’s first encounter with death. J.A. Bayona’s direction is decent, a del Toro - lite version, but it lacks the depth and imagination of a master. Still, it conveys an important message about a tough topic.

This film based on Patrick Ness’s novel tries to tell a story about a child facing his mother’s cancer and death. J.A. Bayona’s direction, while showing some visual skills, is an imitation of del Toro and doesn’t fully reach the master - level this material needs. Overall, it has its moments but falls a bit short.

“A Monster Calls” aims to teach kids about death through a fantasy story. The plot with Conor and the tree monster is engaging. However, Bayona’s del Toro - inspired direction is not as powerful or imaginative as it could be. It’s a good effort but not a masterpiece.

The movie is a simple yet impactful take on a child’s experience with death. J.A. Bayona does a reasonable job directing, though his del Toro - like approach lacks the personal touch and visual flair of the master. It’s a decent film for its message but has room for improvement.
